We are delighted to welcome Alex Church Gonzales, our 2025-2026 Playwrights Lab Assistant.
Born and raised in California’s farm country, Alex brings creativity and tenacity to all their theatrical work and is especially excited to do so as New Dramatists’ Lab Assistant! As a director, designer, and stage manager, they gravitate towards the surreal, silly, and spectacular, with a special interest in staging the impossible and developing new works. She is a long-time member of Breaking & Entering Theatre Collective and one-half of Monster Of the Weak Puppetry: a sustainable studio that transforms pollution into puppets and theatrical magic. A Swiss Army knife of the downtown theatre scene, Alex has collaborated on projects at La Mama ETC, Keen Company, LIU Post, Flamboyán Theater, The 14th St Y, Classic Stage Company, The Anthropologists, CO_LAB Theater Group, The Old Stone House, Dixon Place, and more. Alex is a graduate of Pace University’s IPE Directing Program, former New Dramatists intern, and alum of Directors Lab North. When Alex isn’t backstage, they spend their time making their own spectacular costumes, playing farm-related video games (you can take the person out of California, but…), and attempting to watch 100 movies a year. alexchurchgonzales.com; @monsteroftheweakpuppetry.
