AXEL ALONSO - 45, Black/Afro-Latine, non-binary, Queer, rugged, outdoor type, Omar's spouse.

OMAR DURÁN - 35, Latino, gay cis male bear, dapper, chic. Running for supervisor of the Town of Highland.

PIA WHITE - Mid 50's, white cis woman, Omar's Campaign Manager, was fabulous in her youth. Still is in a way, surrounds herself with gay men.

KARA KORNING - Late 40's, white cis woman. Running for Town Supervisor on The Democratic primary ticket. A "passive-aggressively nice" person.

JANE GREEN - Late 40's/Early 50's, white cis woman, Omar and Axel's neighbor. She is super conservative, abrupt, and maybe a little or a lot racist and homophobic.

SWEETIE (played and controlled by Jane) - 10, white doe, cloven-hoofed, compact torso, slender legs, and small crisp white tail. She is possessed by the demon spirit of Anita Bryant.

SETTING: Sullivan County, NY - Town of Highland

TIME: 2023

NOTES:

SWEETIE should be a puppet manipulated by the actor playing JANE.

The play should be grounded in realism when AXEL and OMAR are alone together.

There should be a clear theatrical style shift when the other characters enter the space. The characters of JANE, KARA, PIA, and SWEETIE should be played with absurdity-- almost a heightened reality. They should seem real, but something is going on underneath the surface. The play should feel hauntingly uneasy when they enter AXEL and OMAR's space.
