Support for Writers with Children: Announcing The Lilly-Ruhl Fund

March 23, 2017

Support for Writers with Children -- After winning the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, alumna Sarah Ruhl made a gift of $5,000 to New Dramatists to set up a child care reimbursement fund for playwrights.

In January, 2017, with the support of alumna, Julia Jordan, The Lilly Awards Foundation’s Board of Directors matched Sarah's gift with an additional $5,000, and in so doing, created the Lilly-Ruhl Fund. This Fund reimburses child care expenses incurred while playwrights are making their work onsite at New Dramatists, including one and two day readings, writing retreats, writers executive meetings, and also, off-site during out-of-town productions

This support augments the Opportunity Fund, established by a gift of $10,000 from the Howard Gilman Foundation, to offset childcare and other practical expenses that prohibit playwrights from participating in extended workshops and retreats, such as PlayTime, the Jerry A. Tishman Playwrights Creativity Fund workshops, the Composer-Librettist Studio, and Admissions.
