Obituary: New Dramatists Alum Anna Marie Barlow

barlow-anna-marie_0.gifAnna Marie Barlow (White) who is best known for her Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals, died on July 3, 2013, in New York City, following complications from a stroke. Ms. Barlow was an alumna of New Dramatists.

Barlow, who wrote more than 40 plays and musicals, started her career as an actress (studying with Stella Adler) playing roles in Festival on Broadway and many others Off-Broadway and in summer stock. She soon discovered her talents were taking her to playwriting. Her first play, Ferryboat, was written as an audition for acting jobs. However, when Rodgers and Hammerstein saw it they encouraged her to write plays and were very instrumental in securing her a place on The New Dramatists Committee, an organization which helps aspiring playwrights, which was then in its formative stages.

She is probably best known for her some of her full length plays, her adaptation of Henry James' The Ambassadors was produced on Broadway starring Howard Keel and Danielle Darieux, Her rendition of the Rumpelstiltskin story, entitled Half Past Wednesday was also a Broadway production.

Her civil war story play Glory Hallelujah was produced at ACT in San Francisco and then again Off Broadway and for television on NET. She also adapted Truman Capote’s Other Voices, Other Rooms for the stage which had its premiere at The Buffalo Round Theatre.

She has written numerous one act plays and many of her works have been performed across the country and internationally over the years.

Barlow’s television writing credits include: Executive Suite (producer, Don Brinkley); Soap operas to include: One Life to Live and All My Children where she was one of the soap opera’s first writers.

Anna Marie leaves behind her loving husband Brooke, her two daughters Annella and Alora and their husbands Roy and Robert and her grandchildren, Kelsey, Kenzi, Blake and Avery.

Services will be held on Thursday July 11, 2013 in New York City at St James Church, 865 Madison Avenue, NY NY 10021 at 11:30 am. The church does not accept flowers. She will be interred in Placerville, CA.
