7:30pm Musical Selections from Madame Defarge and The Black Monk
Directed by Gabriel Vega Weissman
Musical direction by Christopher Berg

Join us for a celebration of the release of the Dramatists Play Service acting edition of Wendy Kesselman’s Madame Defarge and the original cast recording of her chamber musical, The Black Monk. The evening will include selections from both pieces performed by Julie Craig, Lou Liberatore, Austin Pendleton, Dana Watkins and Teal Wicks, with direction by Gabriel Vega Weissman, musical direction by Christopher Berg, and remarks by special guest James Lapine.

Madame Defarge radically reimagines Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. Against the turmoil of the French Revolution, two men similar in face but separate in fate weave a story of sacrifice and salvation, all driven by Therese Defarge who battles oppression with longings for love, freedom, justice and revenge. In The Black Monk, inspired by Chekhov’s story, Andrei returns home to his guardian Igor, rekindling his attachment to Tanya, his childhood love. His artistic obsession thrives within his adoring family but the Black Monk, a spectral and charming figure only Andrei sees, threatens to lure him into the unknown.
