Admissions, Incoming, Continuing and Outgoing Residents and Fellows

    The Playwrights' Lab

The Playwrights' Lab encompasses virtually all of New Dramatists' artistic programming

Each resident playwright at New Dramatists becomes the artistic director of their own seven-year new work/new method laboratory, making New Dramatists’ annual programming richly disparate and wonderfully unpredictable. Lab activity runs the gamut from private creative meetings, to one-day readings, to week-long extended development sessions, to our two on-site studio intensives, PlayTime and the Composer-Librettist Studio.

    Playwright Support Services

Investment in, and engagement of New Dramatists' resident writer community

Playwright support services include a broad range of initiatives and resources: writer/staff meetings throughout their seven-year residencies; writer-driven symposia, craft discussions, public and private discussion forums; New Dramatists’ sponsored writer retreats; playwright awards offered to ND residents and in one case, for the national writer community. New Dramatists also supports a range of other residency benefits, including free script duplication, free writing facilities, a free public script library and online catalog, and advocacy for our playwrights’ work to theatres across the nation.

New Dramatists' impact on participating writers and the playwriting/new play producer community

New Dramatists provides playwrights with the flexibility, structure, and safety they need, to explore new ideas and take artistic risks. We’re proud of – and humbled by – our impact on the field, from individual reports made by playwrights and collaborators, to ways that projects supported in our Lab find homes on stages throughout the country.

New Dramatists runs on 100% community power

As an organization that raises its full operating budget from donations, we are deeply grateful for the wide range of individual, foundation, corporate and government donors who directly supported the work of our company of resident and affiliated playwrights in 2016-17, through support of our operations and programs, the 2017 Spring Luncheon honoring the duo of Paula Vogel and Daryl Roth, and various In-Kind Gifts of goods and services. As well, we’re deeply honored by Legacy Gifts and Pledges made to New Dramatists, which underpin our organization’s reserve fund.

    Financial Health

An overview of New Dramatists' financial stability

We do not take financial stability for granted. Donated monies are devoted to our mission of service, and it is our responsibility to make certain that our fiscal management practices reflect appreciation for that relationship. Through careful budgeting and management, we've earned a solid reputation in the philanthropic and artistic communities.
