Born and raised in California’s Central Valley, A. Zell Williams writes to get people talking about the way they live their lives and question beliefs in order to bring light to ignored topics. Zell’s passion for sparking a dialogue has won him Philadelphia Theatre Company’s Terrence McNally Award, Marin Theatre Company’s David Calicchio Emerging American Playwright Prize, the National New Play Network’s Smith Prize for Political Theatre, New York University’s Rita & Burton Goldberg Playwriting Prize, Reverie Productions’ Next Generation Playwright’s Award, and the Barrymore Award for Best New Play (Down Past Passyunk, InterAct Theatre Company.) He has been nominated for the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s L. Arnold Weissberger Award by Playwrights’ Horizon and The Lark, as well as a three nominations for the Playwright of New York (PoNY) Fellowship. He was a finalist for the Yale Drama Series for Emerging Playwrights, Aurora Theatre's Global Age Project Award, Kitchen Dog Theatre's New Works Festival, and the Van Lier Fellowship at the Lark Play Development Center, as well as a semifinalist for the Princess Grace Award, the Ashland New Play Festival (Ashland, OR), Centre Stage Theatre's New Works Festival, (Greenville, SC,) and Victory Gardens Theatre's Ignition Festival. Zell holds a BA in Theatre Arts from Santa Clara University and earned an MFA in Dramatic Writing under instructors such as Suzan-Lori Parks, David Grimm, and Charlie Rubin. He has served as a National New Play Network Playwright-in-Residence at Philadelphia's InterAct Theatre Company, the Tow Foundation’s Emerging Playwright-in-Residence at the Public Theater, a member of The Civilians' R&D Group and Ars Nova’s Play Group, and written for the long-running NBC drama, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

A. Zell Williams' New Short Play Presented at the Royal Court

LONDON - This year's Big Idea series of 10-minute plays at the Royal Court will feature a new work by New Dramatists resident A. Zell Williams. 'Like The 60s Never Happened is an evening of new pieces by 4 international writers exploring what today's world would look like if social or technological innovations of the 1960s never occurred. The Royal Court Extends Residency to A. Zell Williams

London's Royal Court Theatre will be hosting A. Zell Williams (ND Class of 2021) for a developmental residency this June. Williams and five other US playwrights will spend a week shaping pieces and exploring London's theatre scene. Zell will be working on his play, JUNETEENTH, which was created with support from the Public Theater and the Vineyard Arts Project. The piece will receive a Creativity Fund workshop at New Dramatists in May before it goes overseas.

'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Hires A. Zell Williams as Staff Writer

This January, New Dramatists resident playwright, A. Zell Williams, will begin working as a Staff Writer on NBC's popular crime drama, 'Law & Order: SVU.' Williams is excited to have the chance to contribute to one of his favorite series, which is currently in its sixteenth season. Additionally, he is thrilled to get to work in one of the few TV writers rooms based in New York.

'Down Past Passyunk' Wins 2 Barrymore Awards

A. Zell Williams' new play dealing with race and neighborhood identity won Barrymore Awards for Best New Play and Best Overall Production of a Play at the 2014 Barrymore Awards. DOWN PAST PASSYUNK Nominated for 8 Barrymore Awards

The World Premier of A. Zell Williams' DOWN PAST PASSYUNK has been nominated for 8 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre. The honor is given out by Theatre Philadelphia in recognition of outstanding professional dramas and musicals by local theaters and producers. InterAct Theatre Company's production received nominations for Best New Play, Best Lead & Supporting Actors, Best Lead Actress, and Best Direction.
