New Dramatists presents the 13th annual PlayTime, a 2-week laboratory retreat for five plays-in-progress designed to give playwrights the opportunity to explore, workshop, rethink, and revise ambitious new works of theatre by drawing from a supportive company of collaborators, including actors, directors, process facilitators, dramaturgs, stage managers, staff, fellow playwrights, among others. The round-the-clock schedule offers intensive and flexible time for rehearsal, rewrites, feedback, and community engagement. PlayTime has helped bring close to fifty plays to fruition since 2001.
In November, the wonderful folks at the Weston Playhouse in Weston, VT hosted a writing retreat for six New Dramatists playwrights. New Dramatists supplied the transportation, food, of course the playwrights, and one staff member to coordinate it all for the week. Weston provided location location location; two beautiful old homes with multiple bedrooms, separate writing spaces, many bathrooms and working fire places right on Main Street in the quaint village of Weston, VT, that has not one, but TWO country stores! The dragon is called the Tiamat, and in last fall’s production of Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters, this firebreather closed the show. As the terrified heroine cowered in a spotlight, smoke filled the Flea Theater’s narrow stage. When the lights rose, there was the monster: a colossal five-headed puppet whose handlers were neatly concealed behind the fog. As a practical effect, the Tiamat was convincing enough to make one swear off CGI forever. As theatrical spectacle, it was a highlight of 2011. Read More
Casting has been announced for The Flea Theater's world premiere production of Qui Nguyen's She Kills Monsters, written by Qui Nguyen. Robert Ross Parker will direct the production, which will run November 4-December 23, with an opening on November 17. Read More
