Drama/music-driven spectacle
A veteran bandleader in a faded galactic headdress makes a final journey home to Birmingham, Alabama. Wheelchair bound, speaking through a keyboard, the visionary proponent of ancient-futuristic space jazz won't give up until he explains himself to his estranged sister. A rhythmically propulsive, spectacle-driven journey through Sun Ra's childhood and rise to fame reveals the emotional depths of this charismatic and outrageous star. The play asks what it might mean to embrace a difficult, experimental, and idiosyncratic creative artist in our society.
