Each year New Dramatists recognizes four actors who have contributed substantially to the creation of new works by our resident writers. In our latest podcast episode, John Steber, New Dramatists' Director of the Playwrights Lab, interviews Vanessa Aspillaga, recipient of the Charles Bowden Award in 2005.
Five New Dramatists residents playwrights - Sharon Bridgforth, Andy Bragen, Clarence Coo, Erin Courtney, and Sibyl Kempson— talk about the evolution of their projects within the concentrated pressure-cooker environment of New Dramatists' PlayTime Developmental Studio. The episode was edited by Karinne Keithley Syers from interviews that she and Mashuq Deen, serving as resource playwrights to the participants, conducted during the second week of the Studio in November, 2015.

Manhattan Theater Club has been the subject of controversy in the news recently for their lack of diversity in the upcoming season. However, one of our New Dramatists playwrights in residence found it unsurprising in the least. Commentary by A. Zell Williams.

New Dramatists resident playwright Sharon Bridgforth interviews her wife, Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance and of African and African Diaspora Studies at University of Texas at Austin, in their San Francisco apartment about the process of writing her new book, Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Àṣẹ, and the Power of the Present Moment, and the jazz principles upon which it’s based. The book focuses on the theatrical work of New Dramatists alumni Daniel Alexander Jones and Erik Ehn, among others, as well as Sharon's own work.

New Dramatists resident playwright A. Zell Williams sits down with Abrams Artists Agency agent and President of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, Beth Blickers. For the past two decades, Beth has shepherded the careers of emerging and established artists, many of whom are or have been resident writers of New Dramatists. In this conversation, Zell and Beth look beyond the clichés of getting an agent to understand the relationship between an artist and their representation, how agents choose to take on clients, and how that relationship changes and grows over time.
Creating a Work of Art Based on a Work of Art
Barbara Hammond shares the research process for her new play, We Are Pussy Riot, based on the experiences of the Russian feminist punk performance protest group, Pussy Riot. Following her travels to Moscow and development sessions at New Dramatists, Barbara gathered a panel of experts on contemporary Russian culture and politics, and hosted a discussion that was open to the public. Panelists include Argemino Barro, correspondent for the war in Ukraine (El Confidencial); Melik Kaylan, journalist and political commentator (Wall Street Journal); and Mike Lerner, whose documentary film, A Punk Prayer, captures Pussy Riot’s trial after the arrest of their action at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012. We Are Pussy Riot is a commission from the Contemporary American Theatre Festival and will receive its world premiere in July 2015 (www.catf.org).
