Matthew Paul Olmos iHe is a three-time Sundance Institute Fellowship/Residency recipient (2014 Lab, 2013 UCROSS, 2009 Time Warner Storytelling Fellow), New Dramatists Resident Playwright, Center Theatre Group LA Writers Workshop member, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Brown Swan Lab Writer, Princess Grace Awardee in Playwriting, National Latino Playwright Awardee, and La MaMa e.t.c.'s Ellen Stewart Emerging Playwright Awardee as selected by Sam Shepard.

He spent two years as a Mabou Mines/SUITE Resident Artist being mentored by the late Ruth Maleczech and is a former New York Theatre Workshop's Emerging Artist Fellow, Baryshnikov Arts Center Artist in Residence, Dramatists Guild Fellow, Primary Stages' Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer, Brooklyn Arts Exchange Resident Artist, INTAR H.P.R.L Playwright, Rising Circle Collective Playwright, terraNOVA Collective's Groundbreakers Playwright; he is also an Echo Theater Company Resident Playwright and an Ensemble Studio Theater lifetime member.

He received the Sundance Institute Time Warner Storytelling Fellowship for his play I PUT THE FEAR OF MÉXICO IN'EM, which world-premiered in Chicago at Teatro Vista; it has also been developed by INTAR Theatre, The Working Theatre, The Lark, The Kennedy Center with The Inkwell, and the Gala Theatre in Washington D.C.. It was on the syllabus at a Rutger’s University course taught by Caridad Svich. It is published by both NoPassport Press and Samuel French.

As part of his award, La MaMa e.t.c., produced his play SO GO THE GHOSTS OF MÉXICO, PART ONE, the first in his 3-play cycle about the U.S./México drug wars; directed by former Public Theater Director of Under the Radar Meiyin Wang. The production played a sold-out run and was a New York Times Critic's Pick. The Spanish version premiered in México and was also produced by Repertorio Español. The English version is published by Samuel French and had a regional premiere in 2016 at Undermain Theatre in Dallas, TX.

He holds an M.F.A. in Playwriting from the New School for Drama, a B.A. in Playwriting from UC Santa Barbara. He was the co-founder and former Artistic Director of woken’glacier theatre company (two-time New York Innovative Theatre Award nominee), a member of NoPassport with Caridad Svich, a National Endowment for the Arts New Play Development reader, a New York Innovative Awards judge, selection committee member for The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week and Playwrights of New York (PoNY) Fellowship; as well a three-time Kilroys nominator.

A regular essayist to The Brooklyn Rail's In Dialogue series, where he has published work on Christopher Chen, Carla Ching, Kristoffer Diaz, Marcus Gardley, Young Jean Lee, Taylor Mac, Ruth Maleczech, Dominique Morisseau, Tommy Smith, Saviana Stanescu, Susan Soon He Stanton, Lloyd Suh, Martin Zimmerman.

He is currently working on a devised piece tentatively titled AMERICAN NATIONALISM project with director Luke Harlan and designer Nick Benacerraf, which was recently developed through New York Theatre Workshop’s Adelphi Residency. He is also in development on a play exploring Dorothy and E. Howard Hunt’s involvement in the Watergate scandal, which was developed through New Dramatists' Creativity Fund. And he is collaborating with composer April Guthrie on WE WALK ALONG THE CHRISTMAS BRIDGE, a play with music exploring the personal side to the polarized left and right sides of our country as part of Center Theatre Group’s LA Workshop.   • Creativity Fund

    Creativity Fund

    The Creativity Fund blends the flexibility of a one-day play reading with the intensive focus of a two-week workshop, providing ten to fifteen playwrights per year the opportunity to program three to five day workshops on an ad hoc basis. Creativity Fund workshops are structured according to each writer's needs at any stage of development and are funded through a lead grant from the Andew W. Mellon Foundation.

    PlayTime

    Launched in 2002, the PlayTime Developmental Studio provides five New Dramatists writers with a two-week writers' retreat, right in the heart of New York City. PlayTime is a laboratory designed to give playwrights the opportunity to explore, workshop, rethink, and revise ambitious new works of theatre by drawing from a supportive resident company of actors, directors, stage managers, staff, and fellow playwrights.

  • Princess Grace Award Fellowship

    Princess Grace Award Fellowship

    The Princess Grace Award in Playwriting was created by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA in 1994 to seek out and support exceptional, emerging American playwrights. The Award provides the winning writer with a year-long residency at New Dramatists, a $7,500 stipend, and a publication opportunity with Samuel French.

    Writers' Executive Committee

    The Writers' Executive Committee is a voluntary grouping of resident playwrights who meet throughout the year to discuss and make decisions concerning the work of New Dramatists and to help guide the organization.

National Latino Playwriting Award given to Matthew Paul Olmos

Matthew Paul Olmos' the living'life of the daughter mira has been named the winner of Arizona Theatre Company's 2015 National Latino Playwriting Award (NLPA), and the recipient of the $1000 prize. 2015 marks the 20th year of the competition.

The National Latino Playwriting Award was established by Arizona Theatre Company Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein and Playwright-in-Residence Elaine Romero to create a greater awareness of the work being done by Latino and Latina playwrights across the nation.
