Kara Lee Corthron’s plays include Welcome to Fear City (Kilroys’ List 2016, CATF 2017, Kansas City Rep 2018) Listen for the Light (Know Theatre of Cincinnati); AliceGraceAnon (New Georges); Holly Down in Heaven (Forum Theatre, DC); Julius by Design (Fulcrum Theater), and Etched in Skin on a Sunlit Night (InterAct, Philadelphia). Kara is also the author of the young-adult novel The Truth of Right Now available now from Simon & Schuster/Simon Pulse and Daughters of Jubilation coming in 2019.

Awards/Honors: The Parents’ Choice Gold Award for The Truth of Right Now, member of New Dramatists, 2018 Cultural Diaspora Residency at Camargo, Travis Bogard Artist in Residence Fellowship, Finalist for the 2018 McKnight National Residency and Commission, 2014-2015 Naked Angels/New School Issues Project Resident Playwright, Boomerang Fund for Artists Grant, 2012-2014 Women’s Project Time Warner Fellowship, Vineyard Theatre’s 3rd Annual Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, the Princess Grace Award, two NEA grants, the Helen Merrill Award, Lincoln Center’s Lecomte du Nouy Prize (three-time recipient), the Theodore Ward Prize, the New Professional Theatre Writers Award, four MacDowell fellowships, residencies at Skriðuklaustur (Iceland), Boliasco (Italy), Hawthornden (Scotland), Djerassi, the Millay Colony, and Ledig House.

Her work has been produced and developed at places like the African Continuum Theatre (DC), Ars Nova, Atlantic Theater Company, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Berkeley Rep, CenterStage (Baltimore), EST, Horizon Theatre (Atlanta), Kansas City Rep, LAByrinth, Masilia Afropéa Festival (France), Midtown Direct Rep, Naked Angels, New Dramatists, New Georges, The Orchard Project, P73, Penumbra, PlayPenn Conference (2010), PlayPenn Mini-Conference (2017), Seven Devils Playwrights Conference (Guest Artist, 2012), South Coast Rep, TheatreWorks (Palo Alto), the Vineyard Theatre, Voice & Vision, and WP Theater. TV: writer for NBC’s “Kings” (2008-2009).

She has taught at various institutions including Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), Ohio University, NYU-Tisch, Playwrights Horizons Theatre School, and Temple University. Juilliard alumna, New Georges Affiliated Artist, and member of Interstate 73 (2007-2008), the Ars Nova Play Group (2010-2011), ‘Wright On!   • Composer-Librettist Studio

    Composer-Librettist Studio

    Our annual Composer-Librettist Studio focuses simultaneously on music-theatre development and the principles of collaboration, teaming five writers with five composers and five performers to develop brand-new works of musical theatre. At the end of the Studio, each playwright has worked with each composer and 25 new music-theatre pieces have been created by the group.

  • Creativity Fund

    Creativity Fund

    The Creativity Fund blends the flexibility of a one-day play reading with the intensive focus of a two-week workshop, providing ten to fifteen playwrights per year the opportunity to program three to five day workshops on an ad hoc basis. Creativity Fund workshops are structured according to each writer's needs at any stage of development and are funded through a lead grant from the Andew W. Mellon Foundation.

  • Princess Grace Award Fellowship

    Princess Grace Award Fellowship

    The Princess Grace Award in Playwriting was created by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA in 1994 to seek out and support exceptional, emerging American playwrights. The Award provides the winning writer with a year-long residency at New Dramatists, a $7,500 stipend, and a publication opportunity with Samuel French.

  • Writers' Executive Committee

    Writers' Executive Committee

    The Writers' Executive Committee is a voluntary grouping of resident playwrights who meet throughout the year to discuss and make decisions concerning the work of New Dramatists and to help guide the organization.
