Quiara Alegría Hudes

Evening of action hosted by alumna Quiara Alegría Hudes

All public events at New Dramatists are FREE of charge. Please call 212-757-6960 or click here to let us know you are coming!

From the playwright:

I want to invite you to lend 30 minutes to a new project addressing mass incarceration. The reality of the prison industrial complex hit home in 2009 when my little cuz was arrested. Sean remains behind bars, but he and I partnered up to create Emancipated Stories--a collection of writing from inmates across the nation.

Please join us next week for just thirty minutes of action!

When: Thursday January 18, 6:00pm-9:45pm. Come for any thirty minute period during that window.

Where: New Dramatists, 424 West 44th Street

What:
You will read a letter by an inmate and write a personal response. OR you will write to a prison education program asking them to share our submission information. We'll be reading submissions aloud as a group to give voice and energy to the proceedings.

Why: We are trying to counter the crushing invisibility of the prison population with writing that speaks of their humanity--in their own words. We write personalized responses because inmates can feel extremely isolated behind bars and letters make a big difference.

One letter. Thirty minutes. A little good deed in a behemoth system. Plus, I'll feed you pizza and give you a cup of wine as a thanks. I so hope to see you there!
