Creativity Fund: Mona Mansour

Dec 3 2014 (All day) -- Dec 6 2014 (All day)

Falling Down the Stairs
by Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah

Iraq, 1974. A hotshot young Arab physicist, Kamal, is invited by a colleague from American University of Beirut to deliver lectures on quantum mechanics at the AlHazen institute in Baghdad. Arriving in an Iraq where Saddam Hussein is about to ascend, Kamal—Palestinian born, Lebanese raised, French and American educated—encounters a world totally unlike the lycées of Beirut and the leafy Ivy League campuses of the Northeast to which he is accustomed and where he has excelled. After a series of hilarious and tragic discoveries, Kamal begins to doubt the reasons for his invitation, until, finally he finds himself face to face with Hussein himself, who demands the scientist go above and beyond his training and the laws of his country to advance a particular application of science. This play explores the intersections of geopolitics, the complications of a tri-cultural existence, the rise of a brutal dictatorship, and the staunchly ethical moral compass of a young scientist whose greatest wish is to help advance the Arab intellectual revival of the 1950s and 1960s that has so shaped him.
