Dat Black Mermaid Man Lady
written by Sharon Bridgforth
performer/collaborator Virginia Grise
dramaturg Kyla Searle
featuring Daniel Alexander Jones and Kelly Erin Sloan

Dat Black Mermaid Man Lady is a performance processional celebrating multiple ways of embodying gender. Oya, Osun, and Yemaya (Yoruba deities) aka HoneyPot, Miss Kitty, and dat Black Mermaid man lady work in the night to lift communal prayers to the Light, and to train into their circle a next generation healer. By the end of the piece we discover this person is the narrator, the story being told is himshe conjuring herhe existence into being, and that heshe is dat Black Mermaid man lady. In this world of womanizing-piano playing-knife carrying she'roes and old people that fly - all present are invited to make offerings at dat Black Mermaid man lady's altar. As performers sing-improvise-tell stories/call the audience to process, chant, holler back...all are responsible for the Journey.

The working portion of this Creativity Fund project is closed. There will be a public presentation on Friday, October 10.
