Alumni Reading: Herbert Appleman

May 1 2014 - 7:00pm

Hometown Honey
by Herbert Appleman
directed by Claudia Weill

In the small town of Rome, Georgia, during the Depression, eighteen-year-old Rose, alone in the world and down on her luck, comes to work for her distant kinfolk, the Hillyers. Rose is as sweet as she is pretty, and soon wins the sympathy of Mother Hillyer but stirs up "commotion" in Daddy Hillyer and the Hillyers' twelve-year-old son, Buddy. In an attempt to end the "commotion," Daddy invites the two most eligible bachelors in town, Dave Wilkie, a policeman, and F. Martin Robinson, a dentist, to come and court Rose. After a whirlwind courtship Rose agrees to marry Dave. But a hasty marriage soon creates an even bigger commotion involving Buster, the fireman.
