The Van Lier Playwriting Fellowship Program awards two-year fellowships at New Dramatists to three early career writers of exceptional talent. Open to playwrights from underrepresented backgrounds, this program offers professional exposure, artistic development, and community involvement at New Dramatists. The program is made possible by a grant from the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust.

In early 2012, three writers were selected by three outside adjudicators to be Van Lier Fellows: Jackie Sibblies Drury, Brian Otaño and Charise Castro Smith. For the past 18-months, under the supervision of Van Lier Coordinator, Kristoffer Diaz, they have been in-residence at New Dramatists developing their work and working closely with mentor playwrights. They have been outstanding members of the New Dramatists community, and this festival aims to celebrate their time here and launch them into the next phase of their professional development.
